Hector's First Weekend as an Adult
Bernardo Menchaca
In a country governed by Hugo Sanchez, minors order fake I.D.s to get in night clubs or buy alcohol in stores. Alcohol is the first thing people blame when there is an incident that involves people between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five. It is common to have fights between males. They are either fighting over a girl, or for who pays less when the paycheck comes to the table. President Sanchez’s son has had numerous incidents in night clubs. His son is twenty-three years old and he likes to spend Saturday nights in night clubs, and apparently he likes to create conflicts in these clubs.
When Hector—an ordinary guy with rich parents—was getting ready to go to the club on Saturday night, he was making sure he had the Hublot watch with white diamonds his father said he could use because he just turned eighteen. Hector turned eighteen Thursday, so it was going to be his first night going to the club legally. He peeked inside his wallet to make sure he had his new credit card because he wanted that night to be his first and best Saturday night as an adult. Hector was leaving and his father said “Be careful, son. I want you to have fun, but I want you to be safe and sound while doing it.” Of which Hector only heard the I want you to have fun part and forgot about the rest. Hector looked at the Hublot watch to calculate how much longer was his driver Raul going to take, but he took his cell phone out because he does not know how to read that analog watches. When they were in their way to the club, Raul said “Be careful with all the people in the club. Don’t go anywhere without letting me know, and if you do, send me your location so that I know where you are. I’ll be around.” But Hector was not listening to the advice; he was thinking about what tequila bottle to buy when he got there. When he arrived to the club, his friends were waiting for him outside the club. Hector was extremely happy when he saw the big sign that said “Strana.” It was the name of the club, but he was amazed when he noticed the huge line that went all the way to the first lane of the street the club was in. Hector lost all his enthusiasm when he thought about waiting in line, but he heard Gael saying, “Hey, my dad said we could go in right away.” Gael’s father was Strana’s owner, so he usually let Gael go in without waiting in line. Going to a club was not a new experience for Hector because he used to show his fake I. D. every Friday, but he knew this was going to be the best night in the club ever. Hector ordered the tequila bottle he had in mind all the way since his house, and he started ordering a lot of unnecessary things to attract the girls’ attention. He was constantly looking at his watch so that people see him wearing the white diamonds Hublot. He started talking to Valeria who had a boyfriend that was twenty-three and was known for beating up everyone that talked to Valeria, but Hector was drunk enough to forget about it. Hector thought Vale was into him, so he tried to make a move; she responded with a loud and painful slap in his left cheek. When Marcelo—Vale’s boyfriend—found out about this, he confronted Hector and took him out of the club to fight. Hector could not even stand by himself; he drank all his tequila and took two hundred dollars in vodka shots, but he said yes. It was obvious that Marcelo would smoke Hector, but what no one expected was Marcelo being more mad than normal because it was the third time a random guy tried to steal his girl in the past two weeks. Marcelo knocked Hector out, but instead of walking back into the club he put his hands around Hector’s neck and started strangling him. No one did anything to get him away from Hector because there were only Marcelo’s friends outside watching the fight. Hector’s friends were happy because he ordered enough alcohol for three nights. After thirty seconds, Hector turned blue, and ten seconds later, there was no more Hector in the club. While Marcelo walked back to the club he said, “That’s what you get when you bother a Sanchez.”
