The October 1911 issue of The Maverick begins with an article entitled "A Chat With You." It is a plea for patronage:
Will you support a monthly paper? In publically announcing this innovation, we are also
advertising our faith in the corps. We will promise to publish eight Mavericks as good as
this first one, or better, if you will back us up. We might burn the midnight electricity
for weeks and still be unable to print our flights of fancy were it not for you. We have a
great deal of confidence in your support.
After 108 years, The Maverick is once again asking for your support. We cannot promise eight issues a year; however, this time we are not after a subscription fee ($1.50 a year, in the 1910s) but your literary & artistic submissions, your amity, and your readership. In the past century, the world has changed and The Maverick has changed with it. NMMI's archives can attest to that. For instance, this is the inaugural digital issue. Expect to see further changes as issues progress. Some things, however, are constant, such as the core values of this institute. The Maverick is still place to showcase cadet word craft & creative expression. A home to both serious essays and silly limericks. It can embrace the present, while still paying homage to the past. In closing, we will end on a few more words from those editors of 1911, as they put it so well:
The editors are responsible for this one, but we do not claim ownership. It belongs to the
school...Therefore, it is the duty of every fellow in school to give his [and hers] unstinted
support...We want your co-operation, for without your help the Maverick can be nothing.
With your help it can be anything. The possibilities are unlimited.
If you would like your literary or artistic work to be considered by The Maverick, please submit it our editors at [email protected]
