Camping Trip
Joseph Rodriguez
The great feeling of driving more than 7 hours and finally arriving at where you wanted to be. That is what it felt like when I arrived at this big forest to go camping while having no experience camping before. It was my mom, my friend and me. The scent was strong and smelt like cedar was right in my nose. There were birds chirping and the wind constantly kept at it. The wind was so strong, it blew my tent over multiple times while I was setting it up. The birds were so loud, it was hard to hear the others talk.
Later that day, my mom cooked up some ranch style jalapeno beans and some meat. It smelled so good I could almost taste it. The impatience dwelled up and to take my mind off it, me and my friend went to go fishing while we waited. My friend and I went to the river and started getting our gear ready. We got our fishing rods in place and let them sit in the water. When I just started feeling like we might catch something, my mom said, “the food is ready”. My friend and I rushed back to the tents and started feasting on what she had made. The spicy and sweet taste of beans and jalapenos with a steak made from the grill. A medium rare pink inside with some meat juice still intact. It was a great dinner to sleep to.
During the night, I can hear the river stream rushing and making noises that you can only hear at night. I can hear the crickets making noises filling the night with sound. I can quietly hear owls in the background as if they want to sing me a song. I can faintly hear wind brushing across my tent as my eyes close and fall quickly and swiftly asleep. The feeling of being in nature and feeling nature makes it so much more comfortable than a bed.
I woke up the very next morning and felt tireless. The comfiness of the sleep was so good, I felt like I could lay there forever. But as always, the birds were being annoying and were also tireless at chirping. The morning came and I was not the first one to wake up. My mom was already awake, and she greeted me and said, “good morning little bug”. At the age I was on this camping trip it did not matter to me what she called me. All that mattered was the stench of cedar that filled the air. Almost unbreathable, the mornings were always the worst when it came to smells.
It was that time of day for us to start packing up and get ready to go. It was not the longest camping trip but the longest are not always the best camping trips. The best part about the trip was spending time with my mom and my friend who I keep close to me till this day. This memory of the trip was most memorable with the smells and sounds. Without the hard smell of cedar and the annoying birds, I don’t think I would’ve remembered much.
