Smell is an incredible thing to be able to experience. I could not imagine what it is like to
not be able to smell my favorite foods, scents, anything really. It is crazy how powerful a scent
can be. A specific smell I can always recognize is the smell of my grandpa. It is a certain smell
that comforts me and makes me feel safe.
My Grandpa passed away about three years ago. I have never missed someone so much
in my life. He was truly my best friend, and it has been hard with out him. Whenever I would go
visit him, I would give him a big hug. Sometimes I can still feel his hug. Over the summer I went
to the ranch house to visit my cousins and we had a blast. We went snap hunting, canoeing, and
fishing. It was endless summer fun. The ranch house is where my grandpa used to live. So, some
of his stuff is still there.
It was a perfect summer night. We had a fire pit, smores, and we had people over for
dinner, almost every day. We ate salmon and veggies. My uncle has gotten really good at
cooking salmon. We ate and talked for about an hour until all of us kids went to go play ping
pong. We were out there for a good hour; it was really fun. I was the winner, of course. We
decided to go into the hot tub, so I went to my room to get my swimsuit. I could not find it for
the longest time. I looked under the bed for it and found an old suitcase. As curious as I am I
pulled the suitcase out and opened it. When I opened it, I got the strongest scent of my grandpa. I
don’t even know how to explain the feeling. I felt like he was sending me a sign that he was
okay.
When I opened the suitcase up, I closed my eyes and there was on memory that went
straight to my mind. It was kind of like a flash back, it was when I was about nine. My grandpa
came to visit us. He would always fly to the airport in Albuquerque and my mom would go pick
him up. It was thanksgiving, we were in my mom and dad’s bedroom, and he taught my brother
and I how to box. He taught us how to dodge anything that was to come our way. He showed us
how to defend ourselves in a fun way. Warren thought he could beat grandpa in a boxing match.
Grandpa won obviously. It was my turn to go against him and he went left, then right. I dodged
every single swing that came my way. Then I thought he was going right then boom he went left.
It did not hurt, but I did not see it coming. We would play fight all the time any time my grandpa
was around we would always challenge him. My grandpa was a professional boxer for the U.S.
Navy and he knew what he was talking about. He fought in WWII, and he was one of the
strongest men I knew.
When the daydream ended, I felt different. It was like I knew he was there watching over
me. When that flash back happened, it was like I was with him. It was so weird, and it is kind of
hard to explain, but if I could have that happen again I would. I really miss my grandpa.

My name is Emily Spaniel. I am from Alto NM. This story is about the fun times I used to have with my grandpa when he taught my little brother and I how to box. The photo is of my Grandpa, myself, and my little brother. Through this story I wanted to share the fun times I used to have with him.
