Metamorphosis
Dai Zerong
It was a rainy day. I had to leave my junior high school because of my parents' work. I transferred to an international school, it was a very strange environment for me. However, this school mostly are Chinese. But there are also many students from all over the world. When I walked into the classroom, I began to introduce myself shyly. I can see the students are very friendly to accept me as a new person. Then the teacher asked me to sit by the window in the last row of the classroom. My desk mate is a girl with long black hair. She regarded to me when I sat down. I responded to her nervously she was slender and slightly taller than me. Her accent proves that she is not a local. There are many different ethnic groups and local languages in China. But most people speak mandarin. I recognized her spoken mandarin as Taiwanese. Then I asked her curiously, “are you come from Taiwan?”. She opened her eyes wide and slowly looked over at me. Then she answered me in a soft voice. “How did you know that?”. “Because I recognize your accent,” She looked at me and smiled. I knew I had guessed correctly. After school, she whispered to me that her name is Eureka. Once in a music class, I found that Eureka like classical music as much as I do. We all like Mozart, Haydn and Chopin very much. I personally prefer the German classical music such as Bach, Beethoven and Wagner. We also like history and humanities very much, and we often discuss them together. The friendship between us became very good. I know Eureka is a kind girl, and she thinks I am a boy with great personality. I am not good at English and math, but I am good at chemistry and politics. Eureka was opposite to me. Therefore, we often help each other and that was a mutually beneficial cooperation.
Time passed quickly and my mind changed a lot. I slowly began to take my own political stand. I was a very nationalist student, and I loved Chinese culture. Because of my family background, I also have special trust in the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It was during this period that great changes took place in Taiwan. The Kuomintang lost its political status and the Democratic Progressive party became the Taiwan government. The DPP's political stance is Taiwan independence. Taiwan independence is the political object of Beijing's harsh resistance and crackdown. I am also a hardliner against Taiwan independence, and I believe that China's reunification requires force. I believed that China need to use the same way as Germany unification which was the iron and blood policy of Bismarck. The penetration of Chinese Communist Party into Chinese campus is very high. Many students in mainland China think the Communist Party represents the whole Chinese nation. The leader of the Communist Party is the hero of the nation. However, as a constitutional democracy, Taiwan absolutely does not agree with the personality cult. Taiwan's political system renewal is the United States, all political parties must take the constitution as the principle. The Communist Party takes the will of political parties and leaders as its administrative principle. This is the biggest contradiction between Taiwanese and mainlands, constitutionalism versus dictatorship. During this tense period, my relationship with her hit rock bottom. Because we come from different places and have different identities based on different political circumstances, the relationship also changes with the changes of policy. We went from being good friends to being hostile in a sense. Eureka was so disappointed with me. Therefore, I began to distance myself from her. Because I think red China is very superior and the Beijing government has the ability to unify China. But most Taiwanese hate this kind of logic. Taiwanese yearn for freedom and independence. Because of the conflict of political opinions, we were no longer communicate with each other.
After two years, I re-read the modern history of China. I consulted various books and materials. I am slowly discovering loopholes in Beijing. I rethought and borrowed a lot of European and American history books and materials about Soviet Russia. I gradually questioned my own logic and began to criticize the Beijing government. I felt I had wronged a kind girl because Eureka had warned me that force would not solve the problem. I began to feel very guilty and sad, because I misunderstood a good person. The history of the Soviet Union proves that a centralized government failed, and that the people gained not happiness but hostility. The Beijing government is a regime that has been destroyed dissidents by violence. They can destroy all hostile forces and carry out political persecution against the opposition for their own political purposes. People see no hope in the oppression of power and bureaucracy.
Sometimes, light gets immersed in darkness. In other cases, light is reborn from the dark. This is the universe we live in. However, never can intrigues and conspiracies be eliminated. Humans inevitably lose themselves under the Law of the Jungle. In a world ruled by the strong, to protect needs far more courage than to destroy. Taiwanese have been paying a price that others cannot imagine, just to defend their faith and dreams. The struggle of Taiwan continues. And I shall fight side by side with them.
